If Blizz moves to Cata however, then it can be safely assumed that there won't be an official Vanilla-Wrath server for a long time and many of those players will hopefully finally come back to Pservers. Most baseline skills have been modified, and most talents are changed. With a Vanilla-Wrath cycle there isn't much point in any "serious" project releasing a Vanilla server because the majority of people, even if they like vanilla the most, will stick with the whole of that cycle. If they did move to Cata then there is not really any clear point beyond there to stop so it could be reasonably infered that they intend to go all the way through the whole expansion timeline.
Given the relative popularity of Vanilla-Wrath compared to later expansions it would make the most sense for Blizzard to go to Wrath and then start over. TBC's release however pretty much confirmed that they will move to at least Wrath as it is a far more popular expansion than TBC, but beyond that it's not certain. If Blizzard moves onto Cata after Wrath then Vanilla Pservers will rise again, but if they just cycle the first three then I think it will effectively kill off that portion of the pserver community forever.Ĭata is regarded by many to be the watershed moment between "classic" and "retail", and even then some would say TBC was the beginning of "retail", so up until TBC was officially announced it was plausible that they would just do fresh Vanilla realms over and over. Excelsior seems promising in theory, but next to nothing is known about the project, and it may not be ready until blizzard is ready to bring a new wave of vanilla themselves.Īt the moment the best we can hope for is small groups like Hyjal or Darrowshire with populations in the hundreds rather than thousands. Sadly I also don't see any of the (few) established projects working on a vanilla server as even with what I said above, there is too much uncertainty that Blizz could rerelease, kill their server, and waste their time. I don't see Blizzard releasing new vanilla servers until they finish with Wrath (assuming they stop there), it would compete too much for population with the expansion servers and harm the monetization strategy they have developed with those.
